The Northern Cape Provincial Government launched Disability Right Awareness on Friday 3 November 2023 and commemorations will continue until 3 December 2023. The provincial government says this month will be commemorated under the theme, "Consolidate and Accelerate Rights of Persons with Disabilities into the future". Different government department and organizations will be creating awareness and host educational programs about disability and how communities should be supportive to people living with disabilities and those who have family members who have a disability. The South African government have declared 3 December as the international day of persons with disabilities and is also celebrated as national disability rights awareness day. The department of women, youth and people with disabilities is responsible to drive the governments equity, equality empowerment agender in terms of those living with disabilities. Residents of Upington and areas are thus encouraged to be part of these months commemorations and share challenges they are facing as well as life changing stories to encourage those who are finding it hard to survive with a disability.
