Operation Shanela arrested 258 suspects

The South African Police Service in the Northern Cape says they arrested 258 suspects for crimes different crimes including illegal possession of firearms, dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor and others. Police spokesperson colonel Cherelle Ehlers says the police searched different premises and conducted high visibility patrols, compliance inspections, roadblocks and vehicle check points. Ehlers says 12 unlicensed liquor outlets were closed, and over 2 000 liters of alcohol was confiscated. She says a considerable number of drugs, counterfeit goods and dangerous weapons were seized during the actions of Operation Shanela. According to a police statement, the Operation Shanela actions were executed from 17 to 23 June 2024 throughout the province to address priority crimes. All suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
