The
Presidential Climate Commission held a briefing on the 7th of June 2024
and presented a report highlighting the country's progress in limiting global
warming to 1.5°C, following the UNDP climate agreement, enhancing
climate resilience, and improving people's livelihoods, however according to an
article on Engineering News, the report reveals a mismatch between climate
commitments and actions, particularly in the energy sector.
The
report was published at a time when Eskom was allowed to delay the
decommissioning of power stations, potentially impacting South Africa's
Nationally Determined Contribution target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions
by 2030. Environmental activists from the Green Connection reacted to this
development and Liz McDaid, Strategic Lead of the Green Connection had the
following to say…INSERT [Green Con]
She concludes by saying that
millions of South Africans' livelihoods and local governance are in in danger,
emphasizing the urgent need for immediate action and collaboration from
everyone involved.
