The acting minister of sport, arts and culture Maropene Ramokgopa congratulates all participants and organizers on a successful 2024 comrades marathon. This after 4 runners from Upington represented the ZF Mgcawu district at the popularly known “ultimate human race”. The epic endurance race took place in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, the 9th of June 2024. The 4 athletes from Upington who represented the ZF Mgcawu district are Hannes Brand, Ronald Isaacs, Matthews Olyn and Nathan Du Plessis. Ramokgopa says “the comrades marathon represents the best of South Africa and the power of sport to foster national unity and social cohesion. According to information, a signature event in South African sport, the comrades marathon brings together people from all walks of life and from all parts of the world to tackle one of the world’s most famous running routes. Gerda Steyn broke her down-run Comrades Marathon record when she successfully defended her title. Steyn became the fifth woman to have won the Comrades Marathon three times. Piet Wiersma of the Netherlands emerged victorious in the men's race.
