This year marks the 48th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 student uprising in Soweto. In honor of lives lost and sacrifices, National Youth Day is commemorated on June 16th every year since 1994. The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) in Upington states that the official Youth Month program will be launched in Soweto on June 6th, 2024. Lucricia Prins for GCIS Upington says, throughout the month, a series of programs can be expected in Upington and surrounding areas. This year’s youth month commemoration focuses on sports development for the youth and the nation as a whole. Various developmental activities will be held around the country in the lead-up to Youth Day 2024. These activities include Netball, Soccer, Rugby, and Blind Cricket tournaments, which will first be held at local and provincial levels and culminate in a national tournament. The tournament winners will be honored by President Cyril Ramaphosa at an awards ceremony on Youth Day.
