On Friday, 24 May 2024 the MEC for the department of roads and public works Fufe Makatong announced the official upgrade of the Laxey and Lurie roads which will be taking place in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district area. According to an official statement by the department and in the words of the MEC Makatong during the announcement of this upgrade she indicated that the 20 kilometer upgrading of the Laxey to Lurie Road (MR974) is anticipated to create 180 job opportunities coming from the surrounding communities while an estimated 30% of the project value will benefit the local people. The department provides that despite the limited budget the Department remains committed to improve the condition of roads in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.
