South African climate activists show support in Paris

South African climate activists and small-scale fishers are in Paris today 22 May 2024 to support French NGOs who have filed a criminal case against TotalEnergies for its alleged role in climate change. The case targets TotalEnergies' leadership and shareholders, seeking to hold them accountable for their contribution to climate change and its fatal impact on human and non-human lives. South African eco-justice organisation, the Green Connection, and small-scale fishers blocking oil and gas exploration off the county's coast have also voiced their support. TotalEnergies has several projects in and around South Africa, including gas fields off the coast of Mossel Bay and Hondeklipbaai. The Green Connection and small-scale fishers believe that court cases would be effective in stopping fossil fuel companies and holding them accountable for their contribution to climate change.
