As online scams are becoming popular a survey conducted by Mimecast in 2023 revealed that 75% of tech experts have experienced email threats, 66% have suffered from ransomware attacks, and 80% believe their companies are at risk due to employees' carelessness in digital security. Upington and surrounding residents are being warned against Cybercriminals using smart techniques to trick individuals into stealing login credentials and one-time passwords (OTPs). It is believed that awareness and caution needs to be implemented as scammers can be disguised in various ways, such as pretending to be your boss, colleague, or friend. Residents are advised to treat unsolicited emails with skepticism and look out for subtle discrepancies, such as additional characters in a familiar email address, the lack of an email signature, or unusual requests for information.
