The newly
built and upgraded Bathlaro Thlaping High school hostel in Kuruman was
officially opened this morning by the Northern Cape Department of Education,
led by MEC Zolile Monakali. According to MEC Monakali, the construction on
this hostel began in 2013 and was supposed to be finished in 2020. However, a
number of obstacles prompted the hostel's completion to be delayed. He
indicated that although the Bathlaro Thlaping High School once had a hostel,
the structure eventually fell into disrepair. According to Monakali, the
department hopes to reduce the number of students who must travel a great
distance to and from school each day by reintroducing hostels to the province's
education system. He announced that the first, intake of learners for the
hostel would be affective on 01 June 2024. According to Monakali, the
hostel currently has 12 supervisors. The latter reported that the
hostel's construction and renovation was worth R63 million
