Home Affairs Withdraws Asylum Application
The Department of Home Affairs has published a statement in which they withdraw the directive on asylum applications, after Refugee Reception Offices were overwhelmed within days. The directive of 28 September was meant to implement a Constitutional Court ruling that Home Affairs cannot turn away asylum seekers for entering illegally. The department says the withdrawal follows threats to officials and public safety concerns but denies claims that asylum seekers will receive citizenship or SASSA grants.
