RAMOKGOPA PRIORITISES BATTERY STORAGE AND GAS FOR ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has confirmed that the government will prioritise battery energy storage and gas-to-power in the first phase of the new Integrated Resource Plan. The proposed determination provides for 4,600 megawatts of battery storage and 5,000 megawatts of gas-to-power, bringing the total to 9,600 megawatts.

According to the department, the focus is on addressing the electricity system’s need for energy storage, flexibility and reliable power supply. The first phase does not make provision for new wind or solar power capacity. A subsequent determination will address these technologies, including hybrid projects with energy storage.
