Africa’s largest iron ore terminal shuts for maintenance.
Transnet Port Terminals has started a 16- day maintenance shutdown at the Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal. According to Transnet, the shutdown runs from the 6th to the 21st of October and will cover cargo – handling equipment, conveyor systems, ship loaders and two rail tipplers. The work is part of the R4 billion Saldanha Infrastructure Project, which includes a new third rail tippler that is closed to full operation. Saldanha handles more than 50 million tons of iron ore annually and accounts for 96 percent of south Africa iron ore exports – most of it railed 861 kilometers from Sishen in Northern Cape.
