A 50-year-old man accused of raping his wife has been denied bail by the Calvinia magistrate’s court on the 12th August 2026. Police spokesperson captain Ivan Magerman says it is alleged that on the 22nd July 2026, the accused raped his wife and due to fear, the victim only reported the matter to the police on the 25th July 2026. Magerman says the accused re-appeared at Calvinia magistrate’s court on the 27th July 2026, where he was remanded in custody and the case has been postponed to the 11th August 2026 while the victim indicated that she wished to withdraw the case. He says the investigating officer, detective warrant officer David Matthys uncovered a history of alleged abuse through hospital records. According to information, the court in considering the application, the presiding magistrate emphasized the constitutional obligation of the courts and government to protect women and other vulnerable members of society. The court ultimately denied the accused bail and postponed the matter to the 14th September 2026 for further investigation.
