Police Urge Public to Prioritize Safety Amidst Rising Concerns Over Dangerous Weapons

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has raised alarm over the growing number of serious and violent crimes being committed with dangerous weapons, particularly knives. In response to this rise in violence, the police have issued safety guidelines aimed at reducing these crimes and promoting public safety.

The SAPS stresses that knives, bottlenecks, and other sharp objects can cause significant harm, including fatal injuries. To reduce the risks, the public is urged to handle knives with care, avoiding the blade edge and following proper safety procedures. Knives should be stored securely, out of reach of children and unauthorized individuals, and should never be used as toys or for tasks they are not intended for. Additionally, individuals are reminded to adhere to local laws, by-laws, and regulations surrounding weapon possession, as non-compliance can result in fines or imprisonment.

Beyond knives, the SAPS also highlighted the importance of responsible firearm handling. The public is advised to always assume a firearm is loaded, even if told otherwise, and to refrain from touching or handling weapons without proper training or authorization. Ensuring valid firearm licenses, using appropriate personal protective equipment, and pointing firearms in a safe direction are essential practices for firearm owners. Weapons should also be securely stored, out of reach of children and unauthorized individuals.
