Obesity: A Global and South African Crisis
World Obesity Day, observed on 4 March, highlights the urgent need to address the growing obesity crisis worldwide. This year’s theme, "Changing Systems, Healthier Lives," aims to focus on the systems influencing health, such as food production, media, and government policies. Reports indicates that in South Africa, the problem is worsening, with nearly 68% of adult women affected by obesity. Childhood obesity has also doubled in the last decade, with one in four children affected. Socio-economic factors play a significant role, as unhealthy, processed foods are often cheaper and more accessible than healthier alternatives, especially in lower-income communities.
