Operation Vala Umgodi Cracks Down on Illicit Mining in Kleinsee
Operation Vala Umgodi
has detained six suspects in Bontekoe, Kleinsee, for contravening immigration
statutes. The operation, which began on Sunday, March 9, 2025, targeted illegal
and undocumented immigrants suspected of conducting illicit mining activities
in the Nattaboi and Bontekoe mining areas.
The six suspects, all
Lesotho nationals, include one female and five males aged between 23 and 34.
They will undergo processing and verification by immigration officials before
being formally charged and presented to court for deportation.
In addition to the
arrests, the team confiscated 11 bags of diamond-bearing gravel that could not
be linked to any suspect. This seizure highlights the ongoing issue of illicit
mining in the region and the need for continued efforts to address this
problem.
Operation Vala Umgodi
has been actively working to combat illicit mining in the Northern Cape Province.
In previous operations, the team has arrested numerous suspects and confiscated
various mining equipment and stolen goods.
The police remain
committed to working with stakeholders to address the scourge of illicit mining
driven by undocumented and illegal migrants.
