Residents Urged To Be Aware Of Banking Scams

Information indicates that scammers are deceiving individuals into sending money by falsely claiming they mistakenly transferred funds into their accounts. According to reports, they often call in a panic, demanding an urgent refund before the victim realizes that no money was ever received. Authorities have issued warnings that this is a common banking scam. In some cases, fraudsters deposit stolen or counterfeit funds into the victim’s account and then request a refund before the bank detects the fraud, leaving the victim at a loss.

Sound Bite - Nthabiseng from ABSA Fraud explains:

Bank account users are advised to always check their bank account directly and avoid relying on SMS or email notifications. To contact their bank to verify any claims before making any transfers and to never share their PIN, OTPs, or personal information.
