SAPS Constable Granted Bail Despite Serious Charges
A 27-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) constable, Luthando Meintjies, has been granted R1,000 bail despite facing multiple serious charges, including three counts of rape, three counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and one count of kidnapping.
A statement indicates that the charges relate to an incident that occurred at Meintjies' residence, where he allegedly became violent towards a 23-year-old woman after she was unable to provide funds for more alcohol. The victim allegedly managed to send a text message to her uncle, who arrived with the police, leading to Meintjies' arrest.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) initially opposed the bail, citing concerns for community safety however it was granted.
The case is scheduled to continue on February 19, 2025.
