Judgement in Itumeleng Machabe's Murder Trial Postponed to Wednesday
The Northern Cape High Court has postponed judgement in the murder trial of 27-year-old Itumeleng Machabe to Wednesday, February 13, 2025. Machabe is accused of raping and killing 11-year-old Relebogile Segami in March 2022. Segami's body was found behind the provincial legislature in Kimberley, a day after she disappeared.
Machabe has been in
custody since his arrest in 2022 and faces multiple charges, including fraud,
child pornography, extortion, murder, rape, and assault with intent to do
grievous bodily harm. The prosecution has presented testimonies from 40
witnesses, which the Judge will conclude reading out before resuming the matter
tomorrow.
The case has drawn significant community interest, with friends and family members attending the trial to support Segami's family. Community activist Herbert Miller has been vocal about the need for justice in this case, advocating for a stiff sentence if Machabe is found guilty. Machabe's trial was initially set to start in October 2023, but has experienced delays and postponements. The Northern Cape High Court's judgement tomorrow will be a crucial milestone in the pursuit of justice for Relebogile Segami and her family.
