Northern Cape Department of Education Takes Action Against Disruptive "SGB Forum"

The Northern Cape Department of Education is tackling a significant challenge involving an unauthorized group called the "SGB Forum," which has been causing disruptions in schools across the Phokwane and Magareng Municipalities. Despite principals and educators reporting for duty, 13 schools have been forced to close due to the actions of this group. The Department has condemned these actions as unconstitutional, noting that they infringe on learners' right to education by locking school gates and forcibly removing educators from school premises.

In response to this disruption, the Department has enlisted the assistance of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to help manage the situation in affected areas. The Department is also taking immediate legal steps to secure an interdict against the SGB Forum and will withdraw the functions of certain School Governing Bodies (SGBs) as per the law.

Moreover, the Department has reassured the public that the allocation of resources to schools will continue as planned. The Department maintains that the disruption is without legitimate cause, suspecting underlying motives behind these actions. The Department expects normal schooling to resume in the affected areas starting today.
