Celebrating Women in Science: A Global Effort with Local Impact in the Northern Cape
Today, February 11, 2025, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science highlights the vital role women play in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This day aims to break down the barriers preventing young people, particularly girls, from pursuing STEM careers, while encouraging them to explore and engage with these dynamic fields.
In the Northern Cape province, significant strides are being made in scientific research, thanks in no small part to the contributions of female scientists. Their work is pivotal in projects such as biodiversity studies in the Karoo, developing water management solutions to address the region’s ongoing drought challenges, and advancing renewable energy, especially solar power. The province’s involvement in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, a leading global radio astronomy initiative, is another testament to the growing influence of local scientists, who are making groundbreaking contributions to this cutting-edge field.
Despite these advancements, it is believed that there is still much work to be done to ensure equal access to education and opportunities in STEM for everyone. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science serves as both a celebration of these accomplishments and a call to action to inspire the next generation to confront the challenges of our time.
