SAPS Constable Faces Serious Charges in Upington Court
Luthando Meintjies, a 27-year-old SAPS constable, is appearing in Upington magistrates court today on multiple charges including three counts of rape, three counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), and kidnapping.
The charges relate to an incident at Meintjies' residence involving a 23-year-old woman. It is alleged that after the woman failed to provide money for alcohol, Meintjies allegedly became violent and prevented her from seeking refuge. According to reports, the victim managed to send a text to her uncle, who alerted the police, leading to Meintjies' arrest.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) plans to oppose bail, citing concerns for community safety. The case has drawn attention due to Meintjies’ role as a police officer, raising issues of trust and misconduct within law enforcement.
