Members of the Pakistanin Community in Upington engaged in a protest outside the Upington Magistrates Court this morning. The protest action was to express their concern over the alarming rise in crime rates in the Upington Central Business District (CBD). A protestor explains:

The protesters held placards with messages, such as "We want to feel safe in our homes and businesses", "Enough is enough, stop the crime", and “Stop Killing, Stop Stealing". These protesters emphasized that they no longer feel safe in Upington, sharing stories of alleged daily incidents of robbery, murder, and theft, which they say have become a norm in the area. The protesters also highlighted the frequency of their visits to the local police station to report these crimes. One protestor says they visit the police station almost daily to report incidents of crime. He says It's becoming a norm for them, and it's taking a toll on their lives and businesses. Moreover, the Pakistani community emphasized that they are law-abiding citizens who contribute positively to the well-being and economy of Upington. They say they are not involved in any unlawful activities.
The protesters also expressed their love and respect for South Africa, which they consider their second home. They say they respect the rules and regulations of this country, and expect the same respect and protection from the authorities. They say they are not asking for special treatment, but a safe and secure environment to live and work in.
They spoke about the fear in their hearts every time they leave their homes, worried about the safety of their loved ones. They expressed their desperation and frustration, feeling that their pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears. A owner of a local security company who was also present at the activities of the day, shared his views as follows:

The Pakistani community in Upington is urging the government to work towards creating a safer and more secure environment for all, where families can live without fear and businesses can thrive.
