Jemina Masilo, a mother of two from Kimberley, faces a harsh reality every rainy season. Living with a physical disability, she struggles to navigate her flood-prone shack, which becomes nearly uninhabitable during heavy rains. Despite her resilience, Jemina's home, allocated by the municipality, consistently floods, damaging her belongings and threatening her safety. As a committee member of the Association for and Persons with Disabilities – Frances Baard District (APD-FB), Jemina's plight highlights the broader challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in under-resourced communities. Unsuitable housing, inaction from authorities, and environmental obstacles undermine their dignity and well-being.

 

Jemina's story is particularly poignant. Without the use of her arms, she works at Galeshewe Day Hospital, skillfully performing her duties with her feet. However, her home remains a constant source of stress. Local authorities have failed to address her situation despite numerous pleas for assistance. With her son leaving for college next year, Jemina will soon face these challenges alone. Disability Rights Awareness Month serves as a stark reminder of the need for supportive infrastructure and resources. Jemina's advocates urge local authorities to provide safe and stable housing, adequate assistance, and address systemic issues leaving people with disabilities vulnerable. The community is called upon to join the demand for action, seeking suitable housing, increased resources, and environmental adaptations to ensure dignity and safety for all.
