The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture will commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the Mayibuye Uprising Massacre, a pivotal moment in South Africa's fight against apartheid, today, November 8, 2024. The events that occurred in 1952 will be commemorated in the ancient Bantu Hall in Galeshewe, Kimberley. The department says, the Defiance Campaign, which was started earlier that year with the intention of opposing the discriminatory laws of the apartheid state, had a direct impact on the Mayibuye Uprising. Dr. Arthur Elias Letele and other well-known anti-apartheid campaigners organized a nonviolent demonstration in Kimberley on November 7, 1952. The public is invited by the Northern Cape Provincial Government to join in commemorating the lives lost in the fight for equality and justice.
