Local communities in Upington and surrounding areas frequently voice concerns about alcohol use and abuse among young children. A significant factor contributing to this issue is the accessibility of alcohol through spaza shops and home-based shebeens. Residents have appealed to various departments and the South African Police to address these challenges. In response, Radio Riverside contacted the local police to understand their role and the efforts they have implemented to tackle these issues. Omphile Masegela, the communications officer for the police service in the Zf Mgcawu district, provided insights on their initiatives and programs aimed at addressing these concerns.

Masegela states that with the festive season approaching, residents can expect the police to increase on-the-ground initiatives to address community concerns. This will include more patrols and conducting raids at spaza shops and shebeens to combat the illegal sale of alcohol, particularly to young children. She also urges all community members to refrain from purchasing goods from these establishments to further encourage their closure.
