Xolani May, a 33-year-old father of two from Paballelo in Upington, received a five-year prison sentence from the Upington District Court yesterday, 26 September 2024, after he pleaded guilty to drug possession. A police statement indicates that on May 13, 2023, SAPS members, acting on a tip-off regarding suspected drug sales, carried out a search warrant at May's residence. The police then discovered five whole and thirteen quarter pieces of methaqualone (Mandrax) tablets in May's trouser pocket. May acknowledged that the drugs were his, claiming personal use. The court highlighted the role of drugs as a precursor to various crimes and their destructive effects on the youth, families, and communities.
