ZF Mgcawu district police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela, says on Monday, 16 September 2024, they received a distressing report about three seven-year-old boys who drowned in a water canal in Gariep. She says the Upington Search and Rescue team promptly responded to the scene and recovered the bodies of two boys. Information indicates that the body of the third child was retrieved yesterday, 17 September 2024. Local authorities are now stressing the importance of adhering to essential safety protocols to reduce drowning risks. The Groblershoop police are calling for public vigilance near water bodies and constant supervision of children. They emphasize that implementing these precautionary measures is vital to prevent such tragedies in the future.
