As national book week is well underway at the backdrop of International literacy day, that was celebrated on September 08, the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa suggests the reading of paper-based material given that in the current digital age screens dominate daily life. Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, emphasized the importance of “National Book Week stating that it is more than a celebration; it is a call to action. Gwarube stated that reading is a foundational skill on which all other learning is built, it opens doors to opportunities and dreams. She said communities must unite to ensure every child has access to books and is afforded the opportunity to achieve their full potential, regardless of their background. National Book Week is celebrated until Wednesday, September 11, 2024. under the theme: “South Africa’s Literacy Emergency: Why Multilingual Education is the Answerâ€.
