In celebration of International Literacy Month, Unamandla Foundation in collaboration with the Northern Cape Department of Sports, Art and Culture and Northern Cape Department of Education held an International Literacy Day Celebration at the City Library in Kimberley. Information indicates that Phenyo Modise, a Senior Manager of the Department of Sports, Art and Culture handed over books to the department of education to support rural schools in enhancing reading with meaning and understanding. Further information states that although much progress has been made in improving literacy rates in the more than fifty years since the first International Literacy Day, illiteracy remains a global problem. According to information more than 750 million adults around the world cannot read. International Literacy Day takes place on September 8 every year to raise awareness and concern for literacy problems that exist within our own local communities.
