In South Africa, malnutrition remains a significant underlying cause of child mortality and is associated with one-third of all child in-hospital deaths, according to UNICEF figures. Yet, preventing malnutrition in children remains a challenge whereas it should be a priority. In addressing malnutrition amongst learners the in-school breakfast programme rolled out at many schools, and continuously increase, aim to not only ensure learner attainment and curb absenteeism but also promote nutritional development. Learners from beneficiary schools in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district where the in-school breakfast programme is now effective will receive highly nutritious fortified porridge made from sorghum, maize, or oats.  Busie Gcali states that breakfast will be prepared by trained food handlers in clean, well-equipped kitchens—either newly constructed or renovated. According to Gcali the porridges and portion sizes by nutritionists meets optimal levels of micronutrients as recommended by the World Health Organisation and addresses key health challenges in vulnerable communities. Moreover, learners are provided with a plate and set of utensils, allowing them to enjoy their meal with dignity.
