Delportshoop High School Closes Amid Suspected Measles Outbreak

Delportshoop High School has been temporarily closed due to a suspected measles outbreak affecting students from Grade R to Grade 12. The closure, initiated by the school governing body (SGB), comes in response to an escalating health crisis that has seen cases surge from 10 to over 130 in just two weeks. Frustrated parents pushed for immediate action after the local clinic, overwhelmed and under-resourced, could only provide limited relief of which five Allergex tablets per patient. Symptoms reported include red, itchy rashes, red eyes, blisters, fever, and in some cases, nosebleeds. The outbreak was first identified on August 5 when learners with facial and bodily rashes were referred to the clinic. Initial diagnoses pointed to measles, although some cases remain uncertain. The Department of Health has indicated that further action will await test results from Johannesburg. As the situation worsens, there are concerns that all four local schools might need to close.
