The provincial police were out in full force
during the execution of Operation Shanela with the focus on illegal firearms,
contact crimes, including murder and rape, trio crimes and aggravating
robbery. Police spokesperson colonel Cherelle Ehlers says during the weeklong
operation police arrested 261 suspects for illegal possession of a firearm,
dealing in drugs, aggravating robbery and attempted murder. Ehlers says these includes
the arrest of 91 wanted suspects who were traced and apprehended by
detectives. She says 10 unlicensed
liquor outlets were closed during compliance inspections and hundreds of litres
of alcohol were confiscated. According to information, police confiscated copper
cable, dangerous weapons, firearms, dagga, Tik and Mandrax.
