According to a panel appointed by the country's Environment Minister Barbara
Creecy, South Africa is risking a R170 billion climate
finance pact by delaying the closure of coal-fired energy plants in the country.
The Just Energy Transition Partnership agreement, which won the majority of
pledges from the world's richest nations in 2021, required South Africa to
phase out older plants before 2030, however, Eskom has decided to postpone the
decommissioning of three power plants until 2030. Given the information,
environmental activists are concerned and on guard, hoping this is not true for South Africa. Liz McDaid, Strategic Lead of the Green Connection, was

Eskom says it is prioritizing grid stability and energy security first before
it can start considering new decommissioning dates.
