As South Africans applauded the passing of the Climate Change Bill,
which occurred on 25 April 2024, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy
(DMRE) presented the Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Bill to South
Africa's Parliament for approval.
The Bill, if enacted, aims to enhance the oversight and management of
the country's upstream petroleum activities. According to the department, the purpose of the proposed bill
is to address the present shortcomings in legislation and encourage black
participation in the sector. However, concerns have been raised about the
Bill's environmental impact, conflicts with regulations, and potential fossil
fuel dependency.
