Dr. Zamani Saul, the Premier of the Northern Cape, and the MEC for Sport, Arts, and Culture Desiree Finies, will officially open the
Aggrey Klaaste Library in Greenpoint tomorrow, April 12, 2024. The library is
named after Dr Aggrey Klaaste, a legendary South African journalist, editor,
and community builder. He is well-known for his nation-building philosophy,
which he established in 1988 as editor of Sowetan, the country's leading daily
newspaper for the black community. According to a statement by the department, the Greenpoint
Library is part of the Northern Cape government's initiative to provide new
community library infrastructure to communities. The department says the Greenpoint Library aims to
create a reading nation and provide information services that are responsive to
the needs of the community, in response to a call for South Africans to educate
themselves. The government is committed to transforming urban and rural
community infrastructure facilities and services through the Libraries
Conditional Grant program. Community libraries are increasingly becoming
cultural hubs where people can connect, share information, and access
educational resources.
