The Northern Cape
provincial government, in partnership with the Manufacturing, Engineering
and Related Services SETA (merSETA), will launch a R210 million
skills development initiative in Upington later this week. The three-year
skills development project, which would assist approximately 2200 young people
in the province, is expected to be dispersed across several government
ministries in the province. Premier Dr. Zamani Saul highlighted this
partnership during his presentation of the Provincial Human Resources
Development Council (HRDC) strategy on August 18, 2023, which aims to
address the skills gap and eliminate structural unemployment. According to
Saul, insufficient skills are the fundamental cause reason of the
province's high unemployment rate.
