As time draws closer to the at least three exploration wells
offshore the Northern Cape province that is to be drilled this year, there
appears to be much unhappiness amongst residents of the Namakwa coast in Port
Nolloth. Locals in the area expressed unhappiness during recent protests
relating to plans to carry out seismic activity miles from the coastal town.
This follows at the backdrop of assurance by minister Gwede Mantashe, that there will be no harm to the
marine eco-system which provides livelihood to small scale fisheries. The exploration for oil and gas is
believed to unlock resources that can restore security of energy supply in
South Africa.
