kakamas farm workers transported in unsafe vehicles to and from work on a daily basis

Following a brutal accident that took place last week in the Kai Garib local municipal area in Kakamas where multiple farming animals were killed due to alleged inappropriate transport means, an bigger spotlight got placed on the unsafe means of transport that farm workers who work at the Kliprug Farm in Kakamas. The workers are alleging that they are being subjected to including being transported in freezer trucks and/or flat open trailers with no safety railings on a daily to and from work. Riverside news reached out to various stakeholders beginning with the employer, who play a role in ensuring that the safety of employees in the hands of the employer remains consistent. Upon questioning the manager of the farm on why these means of transport are being used and whether there are not any other safer means of transport that could be used, he said it is convenient as it is a short distance and further adds the following....INSERT (plaas bestuurder)As the organ of state responsible for the assurance of safety on the country's roads, riverside news also reached out to the department of transport safety and liason in the Mgcawu district. Wilfred Moller from the department noted that as a department they are aware of transport challenges that have been experienced in the area, however were not made aware of the current transport means being used for farm workers at the Kliprug farm in Kakamas but adds that this is a concern which will be investigated and addressed by placing more officials on the ground....INSERT (mr moller)
