Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela mine, a subsidiary of Anglo American, says it remains committed to recognizing access to water as a fundamental human right. The mine company says the 2024 Human Rights Day celebrations holds particular significance as it coincided with World Water Day today, emphasizing the critical role of water in sustaining life and dignity, and thus the renewed pledge by, Kolomela to sustain efforts in providing drinkable water to its host communities. In alignment with this commitment Kumba says it provides about 17 billion litres of water annually to the Vaal Central (formerly Sedibeng Water Board) and the Gamagara Municipality, in efforts to improve access to clean water in water scarce communities. According to Kumba it takes all reasonable steps to ensure that it does not degrade water quality or compromise the access rights of other users which is in - line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as adopted in 2015 by 193 United Nations member states.
