The ground-breaking Oya Energy project achieved financial
close on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, according to Meadows Energy and Perpetua
Holdings, and simultaneously awarded Preferred Bidder status in South Africa's
Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP). The
company's project, the Oya Energy Hybrid Project, combines solar PV, wind, and
battery energy storage to enhance energy security. The project, which spans
across the Western and Northern Cape Provinces, is the largest of its kind in
Africa and stands out globally for its unique technology mix, size, and
cost-effectiveness. The project's strategic location, battery storage capabilities,
and abundant natural resources make it an ideal sustainable energy solution for
the region. About 180,000 houses will receive clean power from the project,
speeding up the nation's switch to renewable energy sources and cutting CO2
emissions by about 573,105 tonnes a year. The project is the first example of
baseload power provided by renewables and is situated within the Komsberg
Renewable Energy Development Zone.
