The Namakwa Irrigation Project to change economic landscape of the district

The Namakwa district being one of two growth points in the province, the other being JTG is set to change the economic landscape of the province through key catalytic projects in the two districts. Entrepreneurs have been encouraged to take up opportunities to arise through these projects as alluded to by Premier, Dr. Zamani Saul during the final leg of the Growth and Investment conferences across the province late in 2023. The Namakwa Irrigation Project is believed to be one such project to change the economic landscape of the region which will develop approximately 3 200ha of high-potential arable land in the Namakwa District. Of the identified land, 2 000ha have existing water licenses. A further 1 200ha will have to be secured. The basket of products to be produced includes cash crops such as lucerne and grains. This development will generate R521-million per annum in value of production when in full production as it will lead to an increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Namakwa District. Partnerships in this project include the: Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (Provincial and National), Namakwa District Municipality, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Khai-Ma Local Municipality.
