Namaqua troika engagements on R1billion Housing Project allocations

MEC Bantley Vass today engaged with the Namakwa district municipality regarding the allocation of funds for the R1 billion Housing Project. Spokesperson Babalwa Mzambo says during this engagement it was established that the Human Settlements Development Grant (HSDG) is unable to cater to the entire province and therefore with the current allocation are only able to build 600 housing units per year. Mzambo further adds that the Department noted a significant challenge with some municipalities who are not fully utilizing their Municipal Infrastructure Grants (MIG), which is making it difficult to argue for an increased allocation of funds on their behalf. She says another challenge noted by the department is Bulk infrastructure not being in place as they cannot construct housing units in areas where essential services such as water, sanitation, and electricity are not available. Mzambo says while In consultation with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), they are determining the allocation of funds per municipality and have resolved to the probability of reallocating funds from one municipality to another to ensure that housing projects can proceed in areas where basic services are available.
