The approximately 350 learners at the Topline Primary School on the outskirts of Upington are allegedly only three days into the 2024 academic year. In recent meetings, the Northern Cape Department of Education, the school governing body, and parents came to the decision that children should return to school knowing that the department bears all responsibility for the safety issues that were identified at the school. According to Jenkins Esau, chairperson of the SGB, following a recent meeting between the SGB, Topline Development Community, School Parents, and the community at large, it was determined that the promises made by the department were made in good faith and included, among other things: Getting eight marshals to protect learners on their way to and from school, with a ratio of 45 to 1. The SGB also agreed with the department that the infrastructure report should be expedited and made public by February 6, 2024. Additionally, a letter to the SGB should be obtained so that they can communicate with potential investors to help the community build a school or receive any other aid that will position them to receive aid in the future.
