Public Consultations on the Amendment of the National Water Act and Water Services Act

The Department of Water and Sanitation will be conducting a series of public consultations to gather input on the amendment of the National Water Act and Water Services Act. The department says, these consultations aim to engage interested parties and ensure that the legislation benefits both the current and future generations of the country. In a statement, the department says, the first Public Consultation will be held in Upington, on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, followed by consultations in all other provinces as well. The two legislations were gazetted in Government Notice 4097 on November 17, 2023, inviting members of the public to submit written comments within 60 days from the date of publication. The final date for submitting comments is March 1, 2024. Spokesperson of the department Amogelang Moholoeng says in a statement, the amendments to these legislations will strengthen the Department's role as a regulator of the water and sanitation sector, addressing socio-economic challenges with the objective to ensure equitable water allocation for all citizens and optimize access of water and sanitation resources. The department says, these amendments are crucial for managing, using, and conserving South Africa's water resources, while promoting equity and addressing historical imbalances. Public participation in the upcoming consultations will contribute to shaping legislation that prioritizes the needs of the country and its citizens in terms of water and sanitation.
