The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land reform expressed their sadness towards the death of farm workers recently after being struck by lightning. The department wished other five farm workers who allegedly also sustained injuries from the lighting a speedy recovery. The department encouraged community members to avoid contact with electrical equipment and urged all relevant parties to help prevent further tragedies during times of inclement weather. This follows the tragedy struck in Barley West, outside Kimberley on the 3rd
of January 2024, when three farm workers lost their lives after being struck by
lightning on two separate occasions. The incidents reportedly occurred at one
of the farms in the area. According to information the deceased are identifies as males aged 19, 26 and a 51-years-old. The department says, their identities have been withheld pending notification
of their families.
