The department of Home Affairs in Upington says of the 3256
uncollected Smart Card IDs that were in their possession, they are now left
with 3 110. Patrick Dawids, manager of the department of Home Affairs in the ZF
Mgcawu district says, between Wednesday and Friday last week they received an
additional 306 IDs and 452 were collected since the extension operating hours
of Saturday, 11 November 2023. He says the Home Affairs operating hours were
extended to give residents who have not yet collected their smart card IDs the
opportunity to collect in preparation of the upcoming voter registration
weekend. He further said the Department is not satisfied with the collection so
far because the public didn’t make use of this opportunity to collect their ID’s,
but the Department still has hope that they will come in numbers this coming
weekend to collect the ID’s. Mr. Patrick Davids says the way forward is to send
the list of unclaimed IDs to councillors and hope they will encourage the
public to collect their smart ID’s.
