The Independent Electoral Commission says the first registration weekend for the 2024 local government elections is on the weekend of 18 -- 19 November 2023. The IEC says this event will see the activation of nearly 24 000 voting stations countrywide where voters can register in person and update their addresses on the voters’ roll. The department of Home Affairs says, the department have extended its operating hours for the collections of ID documents. Residents of Upington and the surrounding who have applied for Smart Card IDs and have not yet collected their cards can now visit the local offices from 8 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon on a Saturday. The department the extension of working hours started this past Saturday, 4 November 2023 and will conclude on the Saturday of 11 November 2023. The department of Home Affairs says these extension of working hours in only for ID collections. The Independent Electoral Commission says, all eligible voters from 18 years and older will need their Identity Cards/document to register to vote in the local government elections.
