The Northern Cape Department of Education in partnership with the Department of Basic Education today embarked on a two day National School Nutrition Programme with the focus on food safety. The department says, the main purpose of this workshop is to create awareness to stakeholders about food safety, quality standards as well as enhancing the monitoring of safety for quality perishables and non-perishables products and provide basic skills in meal planning, nutrition and hygiene. This workshop is taking place at the backdrop of the recent observation of world food day by the Northern Cape department of Agriculture, land reform and rural development, during which the department made provision for starter- up vegetable packs for schools to grow their own food gardens. The department says these gardens will in due time address the challenges on non - balanced diets and directly speak into food insecurity which came under scrutiny during the aforementioned observation. The National School Nutrition Programme workshop is taking place at the Teacher Center in Kimberley.
