The Northern
Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development says that the
province’s poultry farming community has not reported any cases of avian flu
which is causing havoc across the country. Phemelo Manankong, head of communications
in the province says that the outbreak from the neighboring provinces does have
an influence on the province, however as a department it continues to monitor
the situation. Affected poultry farmers said it is likely to be a bleak end of the year for them. Poultry farmers in Gauteng, Northwest and the Western
Cape have been hit hard and consumers are warned to expect the worst in coming
months with rapid increases in the price of eggs and chicken.
